I recently had the privilege of touring this magnificent house.  After my initial shock of being greeted at the door by my guide, someone you would know but who will have to remain anonymous, it all made sense.  The house is, after all, one that could easily be featured in Elle Decor or Architectural Digest.

My host greeted me in the grand, double high entryway and lead me into the living room, where he offered me a drink at the generous bar.  The tour was soon underway; we passed between the cantera columns into the second living area and formal dining room.  He said something about the study through the doorway to the right, but to be honest, I didn’t really catch it, because all I could think about was the view.   I stepped through the French doors onto the balcony and suddenly nothing else mattered.   The Parroquia, the San Antonio church, the entire city of San Miguel and its countryside lay before me.  I breathed deeply and listened to the birdsong.

From there we stepped out into the patio with its fire pit, chaise lounges and  fountain, and I imagined all of the cocktail parties and brunches that had surely occurred here.  Down the winding stone staircase lay a beautifully tiled pool, more chaise lounges for sun bathing and a loggia (mini-kitchen included), all surrounded by lush landscaping.  What a treat to be a guest of the adjoining casita.  On cool nights the fireplace would warm you, and on sunny days you could wake up,  enjoy your breakfast poolside and then relax indoors in the sunny living area or outdoors in the shaded loggia.

We followed another staircase down to the bottom of the property, where my host commented on the privacy of this second casita.  The French doors from the bedroom lead out to its own shady, “secret” garden with grass, mature palms and flowering vines.  When combined with the kitchenette, huge walk-in closet and generous shower area, it’s clear that guests could comfortably seclude themselves here indefinitely.

My host lead me back to the main house so that he could show me the elevator he’s just put in.  It rises discreetly from the downstairs study to the sitting area/dressing room of the second floor master suite and removes any challenge a second story might present.  The master suite is spacious and elegant.  Once again I was struck with the beauty of the view – from both the bed and any of the Juliet balconies, the Parroquia views are stunning.  The master also features a handkerchief boveda ceiling, a marble fireplace, air conditioner  and extensive, customized closet space.  “His” bath features a slate shower,  “hers” , a lovely vanity and joined shower and bath.

We peeked into the second bedroom/nursery which has its own bath and includes a fireplace, boveda with cupola, light well and a window overlooking the green area, all of which create a warm, welcoming effect.  At that point my host had to step away to take a call but encouraged me to make myself at home and take a second look.  I followed the curved, sweeping staircase down to the entryway and into the kitchen.  I helped myself to a mineral water from the enormous refrigerator and rested for a moment on one of the bar stools.  I felt so comfortable in this open kitchen, with its farmhouse sink, granite countertops and a window over the second sink which looks out to the patio. I could see myself  enjoying a casual meal at the breakfast table and then having a coffee in front of the  wood burning fireplace.

I wandered back outside and came upon another bedroom and bath with its own entrance and wondered what unnamed guests my host had entertained here.  As I walked, I realized that there are mature trees, potted plants and flowering vines absolutely everywhere on the property.  It’s impeccably landscaped, and upon closer inspection I noticed that there’s even a sprinkler system. Shortly thereafter my host rejoined me, apologetic for having been away and even more apologetic that he was going to have to attend to some business.  We said our good-byes and he saw me to the door.

As you might expect, this home also features a long list of amenities my host was too modest to describe in any detail: a butler’s pantry with free standing broiler, wine chiller and second dishwasher; laundry room with servant’s quarters and storage; exterior bathroom for the pool area; upstairs mini-laundry and kitchenette; heat and air conditioning on the first floor; garage with automatic door opener; state of the art security system; complete utility room with a heating and filter system for the pool and a water softener, pressure and purification system for the entire house.   I myself noticed the abundance of cantera, marble, and granite finishes,  vigas  ceilings, laja rosa stones, boveda ceilings with cupolas, light wells, embedded Rinnai heaters and other high-end appliances.
